Mt Ruapheu

We travelled for 5 hours in the car from Auckland to Tongariro National Park home of Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro.

We had been in the car for 12 minutes when Tom asked "Are we there yet?" We were wrong, Mt Ruapehu was not Mount Doom but Mt Ngauruhoe was used for the film. Mt Ruapehu is an active volcano and last erupted in 1995 and 1996!

The weather on our first day was fantastic. We did not have a clue of what to expect and we came across our first problem, you had to drive to the ski slopes! It was a 10-15 min drive up the mountain to the car parks as you can see there was plenty of snow. Fortunately there was only a few icy patches to avoid but it was uncomfortable driving all the way.
